An overview of scale model kits made of all types of the Mazda MX-5, Miata and (Eunos) Roadster.
The list is ordered by type:
Sofar two manufacturers made model kits of the NA.
In 1989 Tamiya was the first manufacturer to release a kit of both the Mazda MX-5 and the Eunos Roadster.
In 1993 Revell USA made a 1/24 scale kit (unlike most of their 1/25 scaled kits) of the NA Mazda Miata.
released in 1989
This is a rather basic kerbside kit, so no engine bay details, but chassis and suspension are well detailed.
This lefthand drive MX-5 kit comes with an optional raised soft top on the clear parts tree.
Body is molded in red, chassis and cabin interior are molded in black, wheels are satin plated.
released in 1989
This is mostly the same kit as the Tamiya Mazda MX-5, but with righthand drive parts replacing the lefthand drive ones and a new set of decals.
There are more differences though: instead of the optional raised soft top, an optional hard top is included on the clear parts tree.
Another subtle difference is in the wheels that lack the embossed 'mazda' text of the MX-5 kits wheels.
Body is molded in white, chassis and cabin interior are molded in black, wheels are satin plated.
released in 1993
In 1993 Revell USA made a 1/24 scale kit of a 1992 Mazda Miata. This kit not only comes with full engine bay details, but also with an optional spoiler kit including a speedster-like tonneau cover.
A closed soft top is also included.
Definitely the best NA kit around, its only downside is that the tail light lenses are molded in clear red plastic, which makes it harder to replicate the multicolored lenses of the real car.
Decals offer a rear license plate, striping for door sills and two sets of racing stripes (one black, one white).
All parts molded in red, tail lights are molded in clear red, wheels, mirrors and some engine parts are brightly plated.
released in 1993
Rebox of the Revell USA kit with different decals.
Decals are included for badges, instrument faces, center console and German and Duch license plates.
All parts molded in red, tail lights are molded in clear red, wheels, mirrors and some engine parts are brightly plated.
released in 2017
2017 rerelease of the 1993 Revell USA kit with new decals.
Decals are included for badges, marker lights, the orange and white parts of the tail lights, license plates, racing numbers and two sets of racing stripes.
Parts are now molded in white, tail lights are still molded in clear red, wheels, mirrors and some engine parts are brightly plated.
Aoshima is the only manufacturer to have made kits of the NB version of the Mazda Roadster and MX-5.
All of the Aoshima NB kits are kerbsides, so no engine bay details, but chassis and suspension are well detailed.
Aoshima released NB kits in various different versions, including Mazdaspeed versions and a lefthand drive Mazda MX-5 version.
Note that the recent Mazda Roadster NB8C rerelease contains both the lefthand drive parts and the optional hard top as spares.
released in 1998
As far as Aoshima goes, this is the base model NB8C Roadster: the kit offers no options other than a choice of open or closed soft tops.
Body is molded in white, cabin interior and chassis are molded in black, wheels are satin plated, mirrors are brightly plated.
released in 1998
Rare and sought-after lefthand drive version of the Aoshima MX-5 NB kit.
Body is molded in red, cabin interior and chassis are molded in black, wheels are satin plated, mirrors are brightly plated.
released in 2019,
rereleased in 2026
2019 rerelease of the 1998 Aoshima Roadster kit with a lot of added parts and goodies and with new decals.
This kit contains both the lefthand drive parts and the optional hard top as spares.
This version also comes with window paint masks (including both soft top and hard top windows), self-adhesive chrome foil for coating the mirror faces and self-adhesive metal badges.
The metal badges include optional 'Roadster' and 'Miata' badges for the rear (just no 'MX-5' badge).
The only thing missing from this kit are some of the decals for a lefthand drive MX-5, apart from that is the perfect NB kit.
Body, cabin interior and optional wheels are molded in white, chassis is molded in black, wheels are satin plated, mirrors are brightly plated.
The only manyfacturer to make kits of the NC version of the Mazda Roadster/MX-5 is Fujimi.
Fujimi also made kits of the Mazda RX-8, but oddly the Roadster and RX-8 kits share no common parts, unlike the fullsize cars.
Fujimi includes full engine bay details, optional lefthand drive parts and an optional closed soft top.
Fujimi also did a deluxe edition with a set of photoetched metal detail parts made by KA Models.
In 2009 Fujimi did a second deluxe edition with a different, smaller, set of PE detail parts and a set of self-adhesive metal badges.
released in 2006
rereleased in 2021
Fujimi made a state-of-the-art kit of the NC with well detailed engine bay, chassis and cabin interior.
One funny thing is the inclusion of metal coil springs that result in a bouncy suspension, fortunately the sit of the finished model looks okay.
Body is molded in red (white in the 2021 rerelease), interior and chassis are molded in black, tail light lenses are molded in clear red, indicator lenses are molded in clear orange, wheels are satin plated, mirrors and light reflectors are brightly plated.
released in 2006
This limited edition Deluxe kit adds a set of photoetched metal detail parts made by KA Models (this PE detail set is also sold separately as KA Models KE-24033).
A full-color leaflet is included with placement instructions for the PE detail parts.
Body and interior parts are molded in white, chassis is molded in black, tail light lenses are molded in clear red, indicator lenses are molded in clear orange, wheels are satin plated, mirrors and light reflectors are brightly plated.
released in 2009
In this limited edition Deluxe kit the KA Models detail set is replaced by two new sets: one with photoetched metal detail parts and a set of self-adhesive metal badges.
Body and interior parts are molded in white, chassis is molded in black, tail light lenses are molded in clear red, indicator lenses are molded in clear orange, wheels are satin plated, mirrors and light reflectors are brightly plated.
Sofar only Tamiya made scale model kits of the ND and this time they went all-out: not only are there optional parts and decals provided for lefthand drive and righthand drive, but even for Japan vs UK and USA vs Europe !
The kits are kerbside but the level of detail of chassis and cabin interior is impressive.
released in 2015
This kit represents the classic open-top Roadster MX-5.
It comes with highly detailed chassis and cabin interior.
An equally well-detailed driver figure is included that even comes with optional parts for a lefthand drive or a righthand drive pose.
The decals include license plates and instrument faces but also switch faces and items for the tail lights.
A set of window paint masks and a set of self-adhesive metal badges and mirror faces are included.
The paint mask sheet also offers a set of seat belts.
Body, wheels and chassis parts are molded in white, cabin tub and detail parts for chassis and cabin are molded in black, mirrors and light reflectors are brightly plated.
released in 2020
This is a modified version of the Roadster MX-5 kit with new body, new wheels and new decals. This time no driver figure is included.
The decals include license plates, instrument faces, switch faces, items for the tail lights and a set of 'holes' for a chassis cross-member (!).
A set of window paint masks and a set of self-adhesive metal badges and mirror faces are included.
Body, wheels and chassis parts are molded in white, cabin tub and detail parts for chassis and cabin are molded in black, mirrors and light reflectors are brightly plated.
